Having been an electrician for over 30 years I can tell you that you don't want to guess about electricity. I have a couple of Fluke test tools that most people need, but for the average person this test tool is easy to use and available at a good price. Automatic switching between AC and DC. Just turn it on and place your test probes on what you're testing (600 volts AC and below) and it will give you the voltage along with whether it's AC or DC. Turn the knob to amps and slip the forked end of the meter over the wire and you have amps. GOOD PRODUCT.
