There is a noticeable difference when I wear this. My waist is 28 inches I got a medium and it fit fine. However, there are four wires in the shapewear that show under clothing so it makes it super obvious. Also I have a bigger butt and I think this was made for women with smaller butts so it's kind of uncomfortable. I would go for something that is completely smooth all around if you are looking for something a little more discrete under clothing.
