I have kept freshwater fish for many years and decided to try Marineland Biowheel filters about two years ago because I thought they would improve the water quality. I use two small biorad filters in each aquarium to circulate the water in the aquarium and avoid overcrowding the aquarium with fish to minimize bioburden. I also have many plants that help balance the water levels. Well, since I switched to bio wheels and standard size filters, the water quality in my tank has been steadily deteriorating and the algae is increasing. I've struggled more than ever to keep the water clean and clear, even when I keep a small number of fish in my tanks and use plants for filtration. In my opinion, the sponge portion of the cartridge clogs quickly and requires frequent rinsing to clean. In addition, the filters contain only a small amount of activated carbon - too little to do much of the water purification. I will be using canister filters again before I ruin my once healthy tanks.
