Review on Celestron Ultima Edge Field Eyepiece by Junior Samson

Received the Celestron Ultima Edge - 30mm FF yesterday and had a chance to try it out at the DSO in Sagittarius in our lighted New Jersey suburb. I have a SkyWatcher 250p Dobsonian F4.7 and use the stock 10mm and 25mm Plossl eyepieces. This is my first 2" eyepiece and I made my choice after reading threads on astronomy forums as this eyepiece is good for medium ranges. Also, it was a prime sale from Revain, which I happen to have one for had a gift card so I thought it would be a safe way to try something new.Another choice was the TeleVue Panoptic 27mm which is now $350.From my reading I understood the TV would be better but only if you have a coma corrector which I don't have so I can't justify the premium price.In any case I don't have anything other than my existing SkyWatch 25mm Superflat but overall it was a very pleasant experience.The field of view is definitely his Worth the money, the presence is overwhelming and the image is razor sharp.I could see some distortion towards the edge of the field of view but that's not a problem for me at the moment.In any case mu to look there, move your eyeball properly smile.gif. Compared to my Plissel, it is much easier to look for different objects by slewing directly into the eyepiece. With plossl I would rather use the viewfinder. One key difference: with all the light pollution, I couldn't see the nebula bodies when using Plossl. I had to look for patterns in the stars to make sure what I saw was a nebula. With that 2 inch piece I can see it's there. The Eagle, Omega, and Lagoon Nebulae are easy to find simply by looking through the sky through an eyepiece. This is definitely an upgrade for my patio stargazing and I look forward to trying the new eyepiece with darker skies soon so an upgrade will come.
