When I bought and installed this, I did not spend time preparing the gun at first. After speaking to a painter who used the same construction gun for 9 years: I've had great success with this part. This time I cleaned the guts out of the gun with nail polish thinner. Washed several times. Apply pump lubricant to the o-rings on the new needle and install it. The first needle change took about 60 gallons of solvent and latex spray. After correctly installing that very last needle: I have over 150 gallons. The first project I used it on called for about 40 gallons of shellac and oil. I just finished an 80 gallon latex outdoor project. No spitting on any work. Honestly, a clean exhaust valve is only necessary if you're worried about spraying trim/doors/closets or trying to get the job done with a skewer needle. Don't switch weapons! All you need is this. Oh, and the fancy new computer gun is a joke. Unless you prefer plastic parts over metal, stick with the original.
