Not really 8.5" wide inside . This is when measured from above or below. But the two sets of stitches in the middle stick out 1/8" inward, making each stitch about 8.37" wide. Will not hold the document without bending it. Because of this, it can't be filled with more pages either, as you have so much room to roll them up the sides.
