Very sad to say that the saying "They don't make things the way they used to" rings very true when it comes to this product . Before the purchase, I had the same brand that had previously been passed down from my mother and grandma. Easily lasted my family for over 35 years. Unfortunately, parts have become rusty and some small parts have come loose over the years, making it unusable for me over the past few holidays. I immediately ordered the same brand, hoping to get the same quality, maybe with a little modern twist of a clamp to fit my butcher counters (the old one didn't have one). I bought it in mid-December but only started using it today. My mistake (since I can't get it back now). I tried to core and slice 8 Gala apples. The first three went smoothly, but he stopped halfway on the fourth apple. I didn't want to force it, so I unscrewed the crank and looked for anything that might have been misaligned. Then I saw that one of the pins on the fork had broken off. First use and forks break. In the box was a parts order form, the fork is only $7 plus shipping but we'll see how long it takes to break. I couldn't imagine he could peel something tougher like potatoes.
