Over the years I've read a lot of reviews about the product smelling bad when I received it, but I ordered it anyway and either it didn't smell or it resolved within a day or so. So I saw a few reviews of these storage containers claiming they had a bad smell and didn't think much about it. However, as soon as I opened it, I realized I had a problem. They don't smell bad, they stink. I finally got them down to an acceptable odor level by following the steps below: 1. Wipe down with a damp cloth and Dawn dish soap. 2. Put in a contractor bag with baking soda for 24 hours. 3. Leave him outside for three days. They still have the slightest smell, which some people might not like, but I'm not very good at smelling, so it doesn't bother me anymore. Otherwise these are very nice boxes. Very durable and attractively priced.
