Let me start by being long and thorough about the differences between a 40 ounce Klean Kanteen bottle and this 38 ounce Nalgene bottle to think. My kit is built on a Maxpedition 10 x 4 bottle cage, so the bottle had to match all the other "things". KK is advertised as 9.9 inches and Nalgene as 8.5 inches. Nalgene won because of his size. I was most concerned about all the negative reviews about the dirty weld under the upper shoulder, but I figured I could "fix" this defect, so I pulled the Nalgene trigger. So let's get started. . . COUNTRY OF MANUFACTURE: The label clearly states "Made in China". DIRTY WELD: Yes, it had a cracked and blackened weld in the upper arm that deposited soot on the paper towel when rubbed. The weld was cleaned up as follows: I took a small piece of 100 grit sandpaper and sanded the seam to remove the rough edges. I then smoothed it out with a small wire brush in a Dremel tool. After the weld flattened out, I used lemon juice (a natural acid) and a medium grit Scotch-Brite sponge to clean the weld as best I could. Then I rinsed the bottle with cold running water for 10 minutes. The weld looks much better, it doesn't leave a mess when wiped with a paper towel. (I believe the slight darkness in my photo is a shadow from indirect lighting) HEIGHT: The height is advertised as 8-1/2 (8.5) inches overall. My overall bottle size is 8-1/32 (8.034) inches, which is considerably shorter but works in my favor. I would also like to point out that the 38 ounce stainless steel bottle is 3/8 inch (.370) shorter than the 32 ounce plastic Nalgene Tritan bottle with the caps off, although advertised as having a larger capacity. 3,645. It fits easily into the Olicamp Spacesaver cup. WEIGHT: This bottle weighs 385.8 grams, which is significantly heavier than KK's advertised weight of 274.9 grams. THREADS: The large threads and clean finishes of the machined attachment on the top are a definite plus. Those threads are coarse, deep and facilitate opening and closing. on the lid seal without leaking, even after vigorous shaking. An optional cap tie allows you to easily tie this bottle and drop it into your water source. The disadvantage of a solid faucet is the additional weight. I am happy with this purchase. The design is good and the construction is solid with durable materials. It should serve me well for a long time. However, I have to deduct 2 stars for the unfinished and unclean weld seam in the upper arm. You don't have to spend 2 hours recycling a new $30 bottle!
