Good, reliable, a few minor annoyances, but totally recommended.

All in all if you know what to expect from this device it is fantastic and very good value. However, I'm still a bit annoyed that Roland is making such a jump from this to the VR-50HD, which is pretty much the same but with SDI (a few other changes, but minor). I would have preferred SDI, but I couldn't go beyond a $5,000 budget when I bought it, and paying more than double for such small, improved features is a bit ridiculous. So everything works fine on the VR-4HD. I love how reliable the Roland gear is, I've rarely had any major issues, most issues are related to "communications link" errors, either via USB or HDMI where a simple reboot usually fixes the issue and I have never once VR-4HD or 50HD didn't cut DURING a live performance and that's the most important thing. So it's pretty damn reliable overall, so that's huge. It's also pretty easy to use for basic functions (lower thirds and all that annoying stuff, but switching the camera and audio inputs is very, very intuitive). The other major downside of the VR-4HD is the very poor quality of the screen, including the preview. are not in widescreen format in embedded previews, so you don't get a full view of the recording. Minor problems, but problems nonetheless. This is not a perfect device. That being said, I'm certainly confident in recommending this device if money is an issue. There are a few alternatives in this price range, but they tend to be unreliable software products, confusing rackmount appliances, or hardware products with a smaller offering than Roland's. You can definitely get professional results with this product, and while I usually have a mixer handy, the built-in mini-mixer came in quite handy here and there (I almost always have a VR-4HD for every gig I go to , just in case ) because it's so versatile, even if I don't plan on using a toggle).
