I should have expected such poor cat wood based on the price alone so that was my fault. Gathering was easy and quick. The parts weren't labeled but the instructions were easy and the photos helped. You don't need any tools, everything is included. It's not hard at all; light weight is good but not as strong as the scratching posts I've bought from pet stores in the past which cannot be taken apart (this is my first time assembling a tree, I didn't know they did something like that - cheap and easy to send, but the quality will be reduced). My cat is 6 years old and has been a bit overweight lately but the vet says she is fine. This is probably best for a young, tiny kitten or an older cat. He bent part of the basket and now it's crooked. I'm keeping it for scratching posts and hanging toys until I buy another one.
