Corkscrew Contest: Truetap Metal vs. Natural Wood and Stainless Steel

A few months ago I was looking at this corkscrew and another made by the same company True Fabrications Waiter's Corkscrew - Natural Wood and Stainless Steel All in One Corkscrew, Bottle Opener and Foil Cutter Metallic Red looked nice and not very expensive. Natural wood looked more sophisticated. It costs $3 more but still not too expensive. Both received good reviews. I couldn't decide so I took both. The natural wood corkscrew looks even more elegant than the picture on the website and both are excellent quality corkscrews. Having used both for the past 4 months I prefer the Truetap Metal corkscrew for two reasons. The most important of these is the design of the first stage of the double-acting mechanism that they both have. This short step is what you do first on the neck of the wine bottle for maximum leverage before moving on to a longer step to completely remove the cork. With the metal Truetap corkscrew, the edges of the first stage are curved and form two small "legs". A natural wood corkscrew has a thin metal edge that makes contact with the neck of the bottle. (See photo) This is the first step where most of the force is applied to the neck of the bottle. The Truetap Metal's "legs" distribute this force much better than a simple metal corkscrew edge made of natural wood. Although this is very rare, I've had a corkscrew with a metal edge that will actually break out a few small pieces of glass if a lot of force is used to get a particularly stubborn cork out. Second, the Truetap Metal's non-stick screw slides in and out of the cork more easily than the knurled bare metal screw on a natural wood corkscrew. The foil cutters are also slightly different. Truetap Metal is shorter with coarser notches, but that doesn't make a huge difference in performance. I rarely use them anyway and prefer 4 wheel cutters like the True Decor™ 4 Wheel Foil Foil Cutter Remover with sharp blades for quick and effortless foil removal

Cons
  • Socket required
