After adding six pieces of AA [not included], it immediately came to life. I then took the time to read the manual that came with it and was surprised to find that the manual was written clearly and in plain English. Various functions are clearly documented and easy to use. In daylight, this is a sensible substitute for binoculars. I took them to the shooting range and found them much easier to use than regular binoculars. The screen is well lit and clear and easy to read even in bright daylight. I used a tripod [there is a screw mount on the bottom] and after the shot it was easy to observe the target. Then I checked the night vision. The image is sharp, although I'm not used to seeing things at night, so it took some practice to "find" the right subject. It's not a green image like in the movies, but it's not a very good color either. Again, the image is sharp and easy to see. The electronic zoom controls are smooth and easy to use, although when using night vision it took me some time to practice using the zoom as I had trouble following the image in low light. The biggest plus for me compared to binoculars is that you don't have to press the eyecups firmly to your face. It was much easier to just have one screen to look at. Overall I found it to be a great alternative to binoculars in daylight and of course much better in the dark.
