Review on πŸ”Š Clyxgs M542 Mono 100W Digital Power Amplifier Board TPA3116D2 - High-Quality Audio Amplification for 12-24V Systems by Jim Moody

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Better than most - slightly larger heatsink than others

As this is a mono (single channel) amplifier it delivers a slightly higher output power due to the use of a slightly larger heatsink. Even so, you still need to add thermal paste between the chip and the heatsink, and then add a fan to blow over that heatsink to get the full 100W PEAK rating. not RMS! I tested the maximum RMS output power at 26VDC by adding a heatsink connection between the IC and the heatsink and a high power fan and with all of this I was able to get around 68W RMS without clipping which is just over 96W peak. As received (as is) you have NO thermal paste between the IC and the heatsink which greatly reduces the power output of this amp, as well as the lack of a fan. And with that, you can get 25W RMS with a bit of luck. You have to make sure that the temperature of the heatsink does not exceed 90Β°C because the chip temperature in this case is very close to 150Β°C, which is the absolute maximum temperature for the survival of this chip. It should be shut down as it has a thermal shutdown mode which should save the IC but why risk it. Most vendors will tell you what the actual output power of the IC Max Audio Wattage is, but not what the actual amplifier board can produce. The size of the radiator is very important. In this case, MORE IS BETTER. If you are running the amp at more than half its rated power, make sure you add thermal paste between the IC and the heatsink and let the fan blow over the heatsink.

Pros
  • Quality construction
Cons
  • Requires socket

Good amp chip, decent minimal board.
