Micro speakers aren't new. Portability is built into its small profile. What's new about Monster's Hotshot mini speaker is its hands-free and headphone-free portability thanks to a small carabiner that attaches to a strong but flexible rubber loop at the top of the device. The carabiner attaches to a backpack or belt loop, or can be hung on internal or external hooks for 180-degree hearing. Hotshot is not a ghetto blaster. This is a personal external audio device. There's no headphone jack here, and volume levels are limited and can't be exceeded by a phone's or other paired peripheral's factory settings. To experience the boombox sound, check out the TYLT TUNZ NFC enabled product. Another small platform device with a powerful sound is the LectroFan. However, the highest Hotshot settings provide quality sound coverage with no squeaky, fuzzy or static distortion (Tylt Tunz shown on left, LectroFan in center and Hotshot on right with carabiner attached). However, Hotshot has a hollow sound. During music playback, place your hand on the speaker to feel the woofer beat. Small, sticky rubber feet on the bottom of the device prevent it from bouncing off low-frequency sounds when placed on a hard, flat surface. Where headphones allow for separation, Hotshot encourages customization. Friends love it because they can connect their devices to play Hotshot DJ while shooting baskets. Hotshot is a well thought out product at a good price with a nice sound.
