Ordered this for my GeneralAire humidifier on my heating system. The product comes in a sealed plastic bag as the absorbent material is coated with a compound that helps the material retain water and spread it over the surface of the metal wick. Open the bag over a rubbish bin or over a sink as some of the powder coating will come off and get a little dirty in transit. Pre-rinse this item in cold tap water before installing it in the humidifier body. It is also important to remove this item at the end of the heating/humidifying season and to clean the wick tray and surrounding surfaces inside the humidifier body with a damp sponge. The coating compound will degrade after the heating season and can eventually clog the return air ducts if you don't remove it quickly. This is a process I have developed through trial and error over the past 6 years.
