Will not drill redwood stumps - only good for soft wood

I used this to drill holes in some redwood stumps, but it only drills through soft, rotten pieces of wood. He refused to cling to the harder parts of the tree/wood after he did once and almost broke my wrist from the drill bit pushing me away from me. After that it just faded away.
