Where we live, the water is hard (and not very tasty). As for the benefits of this water and its effects, we've relied on reviews here and elsewhere, done a little research, and therefore have a degree of faith in it. Now to the other aspects: When I first changed the water filter, I didn't look closely at the instructions and was therefore surprised at how dark gray it was even after several full jugs of water had been spilled. I just changed it like I did with another brand of filter pitcher I had (although from my understanding if you get drinking water easily by just going through it once or twice, the filter quality may not be as good .) . Anyway, I finally read and followed the directions (what a concept) and it worked fine. However, I noticed that the taste of the water was quite "hot" when the first full jug was filled. Since then I've followed all the directions but have continued to fill the jugs and water my plants until the water tastes more neutral...it usually takes a few. I really like the clean, neutral quality of this water and have been drinking (and enjoying) more since I switched to it. We also get quite a bit out of each filter and find that they don't need to be changed that often (personally I choose more to taste...I can tell when it's no longer doing its job). Installation is a little more than "plug in the filter and drink" but it's a breeze and we think it's worth it.
