Review on Cisco AIR AP1852E B K9 802 11AC External Antenna by Matthew Thorndike

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Works great but is an enterprise class product.

Works great once set up correctly. Built like a tank, with high performance. This is an enterprise grade product, not a consumer product! I took off one star because it wasn't listed in the product description. This access point is an outdoor version of the 1852I designed for outdoor temperatures. Antennas must be purchased separately and are not included. The access point must be used with a WLC, whether it is a dedicated WLC or Mobility Express (ME) software running on the access point or host. Although it supports ME, it only comes with the CAPWAP image installed, so installing the ME image requires a Cisco Smartnet contract. You will also need an RJ-45 console cable to install the ME. The Youtube videos demonstrating the CiscoAirProvision feature are fake, they don't work out of the box. It only works after installing ME, and for that you need a smartnet contract. If you don't understand what I'm talking about, then this hotspot is not for you. Two other things to note: The access point does not support DTP, so make sure you set the nonegotiate option when preparing switch trunk ports for VLAN support. in the harbour. Also, in Mobility Express 8.5, DO NOT select Roaming Optimization in the RF Optimization settings as these E models are clearly incompatible and will no longer work.

Pros
  • mu-mimo: 802.11ac wave 2 with 4x4 multi-in/multi-out (mimo) technology with four spatial streams when running in mimo single-user mode and three spatial streams when running in multi-user mode. 1.7Gbps Mimo mode for more throughput and reliability than competing APs
