It was with great anticipation that I received my first Raspberry Pi 4. However, there was a problem during the first boot... even when idling, the CPU temperature is around 65 Β°C. Seeing this, I turned off the power and installed the heatsinks that came with my CanaKit Raspberry Pi 4 Basic Starter Kit with the official case (2GB RAM). It only lowered the temperature by 2-3 degrees. Again, this is idle. The temperature was significantly higher during the stress test. Take a look at the Smraza Raspberry Pi 4 case. The manufacturer provided me with the product in exchange for sharing my honest thoughts in this review. It's pretty simple... a stack of plastic rectangles, probably laser cut, held together at the bottom with long nuts and bolts. A small fan was supplied in a plastic case. To assemble this kit you have to disassemble it almost completely. The fan was easy to attach to the bottom of the top case; however, there are no arrows showing the direction of airflow. Aiming the fan to pull air into the case seems to work best. What was difficult was getting all the layers of plastic around the RPi4. I could do it much faster now, but it was quite a frustrating trial and error the first time. I like how all the pieces fit, but they aren't numbered and there's no indication of how they should be aligned or which side is up. If the "deck" gets shuffled when you take it apart to put it back together around the RPi4, you'll have to do a little work. It's not high math, but don't expect the easy snap-on assembly that comes with the official RPi case. But in this case it's all about keeping the smoky hot RPi4 cool. And this beat works great. This lowered the average test scores by 21 C, both while idling and during the stress test. Now it runs cooler than my passively cooled RPi3 B/B+. The fan has two speeds depending on which GPIO pins are used to power it. All of my testing was done at the slower/lower voltage of 3.5V as I wanted to keep fan noise to a minimum. Yes, you can hear a tiny noise if you put your ear no more than 12 inches away from the assembled case, but otherwise it's quiet. It's been working fine for me for over a week. Time will tell how long the fan lasts, but I suspect lifespan should be pretty good at lower settings, that's all you need, even with heavy use. I don't like how much time and effort it takes to deploy and remove the RPi4 against the official case; However, the cooling level of this case is worth the cost and effort. highlighted.
