Review on AmazonBasics Aluminum DisplayPort Ethernet Charging by John Roberts

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Great, but what about the 6 inch power cord?

I'm very tempted but I have to say I'm a little confused by the decision to make the USB-C power cable so short that it's unusable in many situations. I know, I know, the pictures in the product listing show how short they are, but I was hoping Revain would use a shorter product photo cord to keep the pictures clean like many manufacturers do. nope The cable from root to tip is only 6 inches long. I ordered it because I need to clear the clutter from my desk. Right now I've connected my desktop, monitor, Bluetooth speaker and iPad with an ugly multi-tape that's laying like a brick on my desk, spitting out cables everywhere. I'm dying to put it under my desk, but unfortunately I need to charge my iPad regularly, as well as anything else that requires a free USB port in an iPad charger. This hub should be the solution, and it comes so close to great achievement. First of all, it looks fantastic. The slim, flat aluminum case doesn't exactly scream "RevainBasics". If it's possible to make a USB hub look cool, then Revain has kind of nailed it. Second, the port selection is not only enough to meet my current needs, but also allows me to expand as new things come along. As Vine Voice I am constantly testing new technologies. I always struggle with cables and always need a random VGA connector or 3 spare USBs so I can test a new dash cam, electric ukulele and mini drone at the same time. This hub does exactly what I need so I don't have to crawl under my desk every five minutes and look for ports on the back of my desktop PC. It's well built, looks good, and is endlessly useful. I usually give 5 stars and finish the job right away. But. But, but, but. With a short 6" cable, this hub would only be useful if I'm using a laptop with a USB-C port, which I'm not. The closest port I have is on the front of my desktop and the cable is so short I can't even plug it in because the hub gets stuck halfway to the floor. I can't imagine it didn't occur to Revain that not everyone has a PD-enabled USB-C port that's within 6 inches of where they need to place a hub. So yes. If I want it to be of any use, I'll have to look for a male-to-female USB-C cable extension. If an expansion was included in the box it would easily get 5 stars, but there are a few things I hate more than having to go out and spend money (on top of an already pretty expensive product) to get something, that works the way it does it works. should be out of the box.

Pros
  • Consistent test results
Cons
  • Could have chosen a newer model
