Review on JoyTutus Portable Car Refrigerator 42 Quart: Compact Freezer for Camping, πŸš— Car, Truck, RV, Boat, Travel and Home – 12V/24V DC & 110V-240V AC by Mark Walsh

Revainrating 2 out of 5

Why 2 stars? Maybe I have a bad block?

Why did I buy this? I recently purchased a very nice true dual zone 68 quart that turned out to be such a mammoth that the whole "portability" aspect was somewhat lost. So I was looking for a smaller device that would be more manageable. The two requirements were that the car should be easier to get in and out of and that it should have a single open area inside (no permanent partitions inside). Not only did this particular device seem to fit my needs, but the recent price drop meant it was worth a try. After the device arrived, I let it sit for the full 24 hours. Initial inspection during this time showed that something inside the block smelled like dead fish and the finish was poor. I wasn't sure if I got a used unit or there was just no quality control. As others have said, the lid is very flimsy and there isn't really a seal to speak of. There was an attempt to add something around the inside of the lip, but that appears to have been an afterthought, perhaps poorly executed. A little over 24 hours later I plugged in a device that was already set to its lowest temperature (used unit?) and already set to Fahrenheit and Max mode. Inside, I placed two standard plastic water bottles with the bottom facing the display and the top facing each other. For this test, I left the divider inside in case it helps with freezing. While the temperature on the display shows it's getting colder, the contents inside have barely changed in 1 hour. After 2 hours they felt "cool", after which I decided to leave the device alone and test it at longer intervals. After 4 hours they were much cooler and after 6 hours they "cooled down". At 10 1/2 hours I now had one bottle that was partially frozen and one bottle that was just very cold. In the display on the right, the nearest bottle was slightly frozen while the one behind was a bottle of still liquid. This test was conducted indoors at an ambient temperature of 70-73 degrees. "Cooler". The same 70-73 degrees, indoors, no direct sunlight, test. I first set the unit to 38f and put a few more bottles in using the two water bottles I had. Drinks are not cold at this temperature. So I lowered it to 20f and still, after 12 hours, it's not exactly cold, just chilly. I then set it to 15f, then 10f. The 10f has bottles at the bottom that are cold, juice sits at the top that's frozen and ice forms around the back and closer to the display where the compressor is. 12f seems to be where I need to leave it longer I think. So here it is. 2 stars to cool, albeit uneven, can be powered by a 12V socket in the car, portable, removable partition. Those are pluses. Cons: Poor finish (QC issue maybe?) No insulation. Works all the time. (turns off for about a minute, then turns on again) Not quiet. (I don't think it's very loud, but I can hear it running in another room. In comparison, the nicer device is closer and I can hear JoyTutus over it, to the point where I can't hear the other device now can hear more) The temperature sensor isn't accurate (well, that could be where the sensor is, but that doesn't apply to cold foods). Conclusion. The new lower price could be justified for those who want a 12V compressor cooler for their car and are not worried about wildly fluctuating prices. It looks like it monitors the voltage of the power supply and hopefully won't let you down with a dead battery. The power consumption wasn't too high even in continuous use, especially in economy mode. It's also possible that the device I received is simply defective. If Joy Tutus or anyone with more experience reading this agrees, please let me know and maybe I'll try a different device. As it stands I'm disappointed with this brand despite seeing some positive reviews in the past. Hope that helps!
