I gave two stars for the price. There was a reason for the recent (February 2005) huge discount. I have several GPS units and this is NOT one of the best. I picked it up because it was cheap for a GPS device and a great entry-level device for my teens. The PC serial port method is difficult to set up when using XP. MS XP does not automatically recognize this device. However, I brought a USB serial adapter to Best Buy and it seems to work fine. XP will automatically detect the USB port (make sure the device is turned on) and download the necessary driver from the Internet. However, you must enter the correct COM port each time you connect to the GPS. Rand McNally Street Finder software is overrated and overpriced. The software is not user friendly and will take some time to get used to. Maps are outdated (4-5 years). There are no updates/updates available at the time of writing this article. The software maps downloaded to the handheld device are inaccurate (the current position indicator does not match the display) when using the maximum zoom on the GPS device. This can be annoying when using GPS for driving. If you use this GPS to travel across the states you will need to download each city you want to travel through. So plan to buy a large memory card. However, you can use a GPS device with a laptop for travel. Software mapping using a laptop computer is decent and appears to be accurate. The battery/memory card cover is protected against water with a screw, but it is very difficult to open and close regularly. This can be annoying when changing the battery every 8-12 hours. I recommend using rechargeable batteries, they last longer than alkaline batteries. Also, neither the device nor the software offer any type of voice navigation; Relying on this portable GPS device to guide you through unfamiliar territory can be very dangerous. Conclusion: At this price this is a good device for basic general driving information (km/h, speed, location, direction of travel, estimated time of arrival, maximum speed, odometer, average speed, etc.). It can also be a great entry-level GPS device for a scout or someone who enjoys hiking (the device is waterproof). I recommend accepting this device as a gift and investing your money elsewhere.
