Review on Kaytee 100528624 CritterTrail 2 Level Habitat by Robert Petrig

Decent living space but REALLY hard to build

Wow no one has exaggerated how hard this is to put together! Luckily, I read a lot of reviews and watched a few YouTube videos, so I knew I had to plan a lot of time to finish it. It took a full 1.5 hours and I was very nervous that I would break some of the parts as they are hard plastic. In fact, I could crack the bottom compartment (or maybe it happened and I didn't realize it), but it's not harmful. The problem is that no hamster/small rodent cage has good reviews. none! It was probably the best of all and the Kaytee brand is sure to have some impact in the market, there aren't many options. We just got our first Winter White Dwarf Hamster so I didn't want to go the way to the aquarium as I felt that was overkill and this cage has two tiers to allow for more space. Of course, two levels meant a more tedious construction. However, I will say that even with a few tiers, things would get tight for a Syrian or other larger hamster species. In a day or two I will try to remove the necessary parts to install the first full cage. clean up and then we'll see. I doubt the durability of the locks that attach the walls to the tray, only time will tell. The Kaytee tubes are also not very easy to assemble and seem to break when trying to insert them into the holes on the cage or connect them together, but again only time will tell. As for our Hammy, he seems happy and enjoying the pipes, two separate tiers and some extra upstairs space that he has just started to explore. The wheel is as quiet as it gets and the food bowl is good. I didn't like the water bottle because it's one color and you can't see the water level. So I bought another bottle (Lixit) and it worked fine with little to no dripping. This is our first Hammy. So if we continue to have small pets I think I would look for a different cage or maybe even go down the small aquarium route. For our first run as a dwarf hamster owner, I think this habitat is okay for the time being.
