It's supposed to be soft, which is absolutely not true. It is likely that the manufacturer used very poor quality leather to make these first walkers as the leather is very stiff, especially at the edge where you tuck in baby's little legs. Forget about using it without socks. Another important point is that the fabric sheds and stains socks or skin. I tried washing them with conditioner hoping that would soften them but it made them even harder (leather) and even after a few washes they still stain other clothes as I thought they didn't should, and have washed them in the washing machine with other items. Take my advice and buy something else.
