Solar Ham Radio - Ideal for portable HF installation. The box has been re-glued and appears to be used. The equipment is not complete.

This is the second one I bought this year. I used to buy one for our Badlands West Trek so I can edit state parks offline. I liked the first one, but found that my single panel, single battery solar portable ham radio setup required either more battery capacity or more solar power draw. I have chosen both. I am very impressed with the results. I am currently using two of these panels with a couple of 55Ah lead gel cells and a simple cheap solar load controller with lots of built in fuses between everything. Check out the uploaded image of a setup tested at a local park this past weekend. The radio is a 100 watt Yaesu 450D HF+50 and the antenna is a 130 foot MFJ end fed half wave antenna. Two of these panels in parallel give me enough power in full sun that it's pretty easy to keep two batteries fully charged, even when they're chattering. The radio draws 13-14 amps at SSB peaks, so a constant 6-7 amp charge current in bright autumn sun is appropriate for this configuration. The only reason I don't give 5 stars is double. (1.) The second record's box had obviously been opened earlier, and the record's glass was quite dirty, with what appeared to be greasy handprints that the wiper would not touch. I'll have to try mineral spirits or acetone, but that's for later. (2.) The lock nut for the axle bolt on one of the legs was missing. Luckily I have a lot of metric gauges and was able to replace them with no problem, but I'm wondering if this was probably why this was returned and then resold to me. No matter whether. Good panel and reasonable price. I can replace a nut or two and be happy. - Dan, N8ZJV
