I am very happy with this voice recorder I bought for $120 with free shipping and no tax. But I found a lot of confusion about its features and capabilities while researching this purchase, so let me clarify a few points. If you use DVD-RAM discs, this recorder can do practically anything you want. do with DVD! You can split titles, set your own chapter breaks, delete chapters of your choice (like commercials), choose the frame you want to present for each chapter in the menu, edit titles, edit the disc title and dub 100,000 times onto the same disc. The HUGE downside is that the DVD-RAM format only works in 5% of recorders. Based on my research I would suggest that if the DVD player is not Panasonic then you have to assume that DVD-RAM will not work. I have tested DVD-RAM discs on Zenith DVD players, Yamaha DVD players, Magnavox DVD players, Sony Playstation, Dell laptops and HP laptops. DVD-RAM format didn't work in any of them. After that, I burned about a dozen DVDs to DVD-R discs. These discs are said to have the widest compatibility and in my research they worked on ALL the players and PCs mentioned previously. However, you MUST "finalize" the disc, which disables all future changes to the disc, but still allows it to be played on other players. I suspect the reviewers who reported poor compatibility skipped this step. This feature is mentioned in the manual but was still hard to find. The reviewers who say the documentary sucks are absolutely right. It's all there, but even after reading it, it can be difficult to find the features in the manual. The disadvantage of DVD-R discs is that you can only select the icon that represents each title, set the text for each title and set the title text of the disc. You CANNOT set your own chapter breaks or remove specific chapters. This is a key feature to be able to edit commercials. You can also only delete entire titles and the storage space will not be recovered even if titles are deleted. When using a DVD-R, each press of the record button followed by a stop is recorded as a separate 'title' with its own entry in the DVD menu. When a disc is finalized, chapters are automatically inserted approximately every five minutes, but no "chapter menu” is created on a finalized disc. In short, DVD-RAM discs offer amazing flexibility but are more expensive and less compatible. almost zero. DVD-R discs are generally compatible but with limited editing options. According to the manual, using a writable disk -RW or +RW only allows wiping and reclaiming space if the LAST header is cleared, they are otherwise identical to -R. Only RAM disks have advanced features. In general, I can work with these problems. I have a Dish Network DVR that contains my original recordings. Most of the time I want to save my son's shows to DVD to free up space on the DVR and let him watch his favorite TV shows in the car. To do this I insert a blank disc and select whether it should contain 1, 2, 4 or 8 hours of programming (I usually use 2 and don't really compare the resolution of different time settings). I then select playback on the Dish Network DVR and at the same time press record on the DVD burner. Since his programs are usually 30 minutes long, I took advantage of the practical function of the DVD recorder. The next time you press the record button, the recorder switches itself off automatically after 30, 60, 90, etc. minutes. This way I don't have to worry about the recorder to turn it off at the right time. After burning four 30 minute shows onto a DVD-R set to record for 2 hours, I then choose which image I want to display as the icon for each episode and enter the titles of each episode. Then I finalize the disc and now I have a disc that works in all of our DVD players and that starts with a menu of four TV shows divided into 5 minute chapters. I have NOT tried to route to the Mini-DVD (Firewire) channel, but will do so soon. I have also NOT tried the online TV guide recording feature. But it turns out that this recorder can work with DVD-RAM discs just like a DVR. Note that the burner comes with a DVD-RAM disc, so you can do your own compatibility testing without having to buy and buy RAM discs. This is the $120 ALL recorder. But if you really want to edit the ad and save it in a compatible format, you will probably have to buy a recorder with a built-in hard disk, which costs 3-5 times more money.
