I bought this pillow after seeing the sleek "U" shaped design and 2 sides that propping my knees in every direction by rolling over, but was disappointed that it wasn't a real "U" but a very long, straight pillow. Imagine taking a straight pillow, folding it in half and trying to make a smooth U out of it, but that won't work. So in the area "self-folding" it is quite voluminous and not smooth. So if you think it will be shaped like the picture, it's not. But I originally bought you a pillow because I had meniscus trimming surgery in an accident on my knee which left tears in the meniscus and left some bone-on-bone marks. , which can cause severe discomfort during sleep when bone meets bone without a soft meniscus between the lower and upper bones. I sleep on my side (sometimes on my back) and need to keep my knee AND ankle horizontal to the bed. so as not to put angular pressure on my knees (because when only the knee is on the pillow and the ankle is tilted down to the side and touches the top of the mattress from the knee, it hurts my knee), so the length of the pillows (I am 5ft 2 tall an inch is enough to support my bent forward upper leg and knee on the body padding and walk down the entire shin to the foot and on the padding in a horizontal and level position so it really helps me sleeping better with less pain and pressure on my knees But, as another person suggested, I had to turn the pillow upside down, with the folded part (like I said, it's not a real U shape) towards my feet, wide under my feet at the very end of the bed (I have a queen size bed) and use my regular pillow for my head which is fine I need to put the pillow as low as possible at the end of the bed so that m one feet do not touch the U. With a regular twin bed that is, 6 inches shorter than my queen sized bed I think and for someone who is 5ft 2 taller than me I imagine it would be difficult for them to do so . It's a fairly new purchase at the moment, but I know from the reviews here that it will flatten out over time. But I'm looking forward to it as I like a slightly flatter pillow as too fluffy my upper leg is bent forward on the pillow as it comes too high from my hips and I was looking for a pillow that my leg could extend out of would . my hip joint is straight and does not cause it to bend up or down which can stress the hip joint and thus affect the spine and back. So that seems to keep me on the same level. I believe that for a person with back problems this pillow will also help align the hips and spine during sleep for the same reason. Since the person sleeps on the side, a pillow for support helps to align the hip and thigh coming from the hip area so that in such a bend the knee does not sink into the mattress and the hip joint does not stretch as much , puts pressure on. and pain in this area and therefore affects the back. My ex husband had lower back pain and a pillow between his knees has always helped him sleep better so I think this would be helpful for those with back problems. And of course for pregnant women! My daughter has a similar body pillow but more of a U shaped pillow which I used when I was recovering from surgery on her a few days after my 2 knee surgeries and I knew when I slept on my side that I had it Getting something similar to her pillow helped me with less stress and knee pain from misalignments when I slept on my side with no pillow to rest my bent knee on. Her child is now 2 years old but she still uses her pillow as she landed in her back when she was 20 years old and even after this accident her lower back often hurts. The only problem is that her husband doesn't like the big body pillow in the bed as he can't snuggle up as close as he would like and it takes up a lot of space, but then they only have a double bed. But they plan on getting a queen or king when they move, so it'll be less of an issue than I'm sure. Overall I'm happy with the body pillow except it doesn't have the flatter U shape at the top as it looks in the picture. My main goal in purchasing this pillow was to support my knee up to my ankle and keep it horizontally straight when sleeping on my side to relieve knee fatigue and pain and it really does. The pillowcase is soft too and I'm someone who can't stand rough, scratchy sheets. I would buy this again.
