Review on AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3970X 64 Thread by Vera Gashi

Be careful unpacking

I've built several Ryzen boxes so I'm sure this is a great processor. - what I did. The inside and outside of the box may be tightly connected and then quickly separate about a quarter or a third of the length of the box. The only real way to know what's going to happen is to open it early. After that, nothing stands in the way of the internal processor package falling out. There are two more layers of packaging, but they're not as shock-absorbing. I thought I was writing this warning because I was lamenting my situation. Never before has the processor fallen off in 10-20 assemblies. Basically it's my fault. I stopped thinking about where the box was when I tried to open it. With most other CPU boxes, however, the processor is firmly inside the box even after opening it. UPDATE: Although the processor bounced off the countertop and hit the concrete floor, shattering the inner packaging, the processor got stuck in the innermost bracket and damaged the locking latch. As far as I can tell, the processor is still fully functional. It handles workloads by consuming around 480 watts. The performance is better than I expected.

Pros
  • Quad channel DDR4 memory and only 88 PCIe 4.0 lanes
Cons
  • Big and bulky
