Although I've dreamed of a 3DS for years, it was hard to justify paying anywhere near the cost of a current generation console for a portable device. I wasn't even sure how much I would actually use. I've always read about games, especially RPGs, that couldn't be played anywhere else. But in the end, after getting used to my son's 3DS, I decided to get it. Although it was listed as refurbished ($160 I believe) my unit must be brand new. It didn't even have fingerprints, and the screens and buttons looked intact. My model seems to have the more comfortable IPS screens that come standard on the latest models. The image quality and 3D is just superb. What I probably like best is how tactile everything is. After a while I forget how small the viewing window is and immerse myself in the other worlds I hold in my hands. It's a different experience than I could have on even the best television. And I wasn't sure about the C-Stick, but after some practice I like to use it in games where there is a free camera. For example like in Xenoblade Chronicles. I only wish I had gotten one of these sooner because it looks like the 3DS is at the end of its life cycle. I'm trying to catch up on all the classic RPGs I missed like Bravely Default, Shin Megami Tensei, and Etrian Odyssey. And a couple of my favorite games right now are Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask and Link Between Worlds. While the overall image quality may seem low, games with 3D effects change everything completely. It's still impressive every time I move the 3D slider up when characters and landscape suddenly become physical objects. It gives a totally different perspective on what I play that I can't get anywhere else. My only criticism of this little system is the battery life. The visual effects and higher 3D quality of the new 3DS XL come at a price. If you are playing with 3D enabled, make sure there is a power source nearby. And the loading time doesn't seem too long, but I never timed it. All in all, if it fits your budget and you think it's worth it, then it's probably worth it. You can play anything from massive RPG worlds to classic remasters and puzzle games to keep you busy for just a few minutes. I also recommend the Legend of Zelda brand faux leather case. It contains multiple game cartridges and protects your 3DS. Personally, I prefer physical games, but if you're playing digitally it only comes with a 32GB SD card, so you might need more storage.
