The Netgear RT311 DSL/Cable Router has been touted as impeccable. Unfortunately, this is not the whole story. Let me tell you the other half. I work in a cable modem. We are afraid of customers who buy this product just because of the many pitfalls. Although the router is competitively priced, consumers often fail to understand that "you get what you pay for". Problem number 1. Netgear RT311 DSL/Cable Router is having problems/problems with DHCP update. Dynamically assigned IP clients experience problems reassigning an IP address at 50% and 88% of IP lifetime reset due to default firewall settings. Netgear support swears by a Windows problem. Problem number 2. Complicated setup process. New users unfamiliar with installing and configuring a network router will find the NETGEAR RT311 DSL/Cable Router setup process confusing and frustrating. Unlike the streamlined setup process of LinkSys routers, Netgear routers are downright technical when not needed. Unknown users complain about Netgear's overly complicated technical manual and lack of step-by-step instructions. Problem number 3. Small Netgear customer service. Very bad. Problem number 4. Incomprehensible firewall configuration and settings. This firewall really needs to be improved to protect clients from hackers. Also, a better interface is needed to simplify the protection layer (see issue #1). Home routers are meant to be easy to install, configure, and use. Unfortunately, the Netgear RT311 may not be the best product for every DSL/Cable TV user. Although the price is very attractive, overly complicated documentation and little usability make the Netgear RT311 a choice only for those already familiar with networking (and willing to put in the time). Try a LinkSys router instead. They are basic for the average user and have fewer features than Netgear.
