We received this waffle maker as a gift for children for Christmas. At first I thought oh great! Another trick where food gets stuck and works once. Well I have to say I was a bit surprised. As per other reviews, the iron's plastic latch gets hot so I need to be prepared with an oven mitt and fork to disassemble the iron. Working with this iron, I noticed that you can't make the batter too thin or substitute applesauce for vegetable oil, otherwise the waffles will bake unevenly, burn and stick. We use a dairy-free recipe and save a lot of money compared to buying dairy-free waffles from the store. I can make breakfast and toast the rest of the waffles to put in the freezer to use the toaster other days. I use Trader Joe's Coconut Oil Spray on the iron every few batches to prevent the waffles from sticking and a fork to lighten the waffles (being careful not to scratch the surface of the iron). You have to get the dough in small patches or you'll end up with fewer legs, fewer tails, and fewer torsos of lions, elephants, and legless clowns. So far I have only used waffle irons in canteens and hotel breakfasts. I've never had a waffle iron and don't know what to compare it to. I love how compact it is and takes up less space in the kitchen. It's been a long time, I don't remember the smell. If so, it must have dissipated quickly, otherwise we wouldn't have used it.
