Today I got my 2015 HP Pavilion model 13-a012cl "X360" laptop with Crucial 8 GB unbuffered 204-pin single DDR3/DDR3L 1866 MT/s (PC3-14900) SODIMM memory chip with 204 contacts upgraded . 8GB is the maximum my laptop can support. The update was flawless. The difference between DDR3 and DDR4 is the number of pins on the chip that connect it to the socket. DDR3 has 240 while DDR4 has 288. Aside from the pin number, DDR3 and DDR4 physically differ in length and width. Search Google for your computer's model number or contact the manufacturer to determine which model your particular model requires. My laptop is about 5 years old and I usually connect it to a LG 22" external LCD monitor to make the unit work like a desktop box. I was thinking about getting a new laptop, but settled on a $44 Cruicial RAM chip, a $120 Cruicial MX 500 1TB 2.5-inch SSD (CT 1000MX500SSSD1), and a new fan for $17. I also bought a Unitek USB to SATA USB 3 drive cloning adapter - $19. So for about $200 I essentially have a new computer. Numerous publications over the years have suggested that adding more RAM is the best and easiest tweak that can be made to improve computer performance. Throw in an SSD and a new fan and I should be golden for another five years. I don't do payroll in California or track license plates in Beijing, so this was an inexpensive upgrade for me.
