An excellent introduction to a self-sufficient lifestyle

In these times of international and national unrest, skyrocketing food and fuel prices, and general dissatisfaction with the thought of getting off the hamster wheel and creation small farms become safe liked almost all of us. However, before you do so, I strongly encourage you to read this book. The authors have lived self-sufficient lives for decades and are qualified to share their experiences. The book covers a wide range of subjects and is certainly not exclusive (entire books have been written on the areas they cover in multiple pages). ) they give a good overview of topics such as site selection, energy and water alternatives, and tasks such as home soap making, candle making, beer brewing and wine making, etc. Most of the book is devoted to growing crops. and a wide variety of crops and planting styles. The specific care needs of each plant are described, as are the harvest requirements. Raising livestock is also discussed, including but not limited to cows, chickens, goats, ducks and pigs. The most helpful I find are the A to Z checklists for various herbs and crops and "Planning the Calendar for the Year" which details the various farming activities that need to be carried out throughout the year. Although the Bridgewaters are residents of England and their book has a somewhat British focus, there are many American businesses within their useful address range and their advice is readily applicable to potential US self-sufficient entrepreneurs.
