Apparently the previous model of this toaster got very hot on the outside and could cause burns when touched. It's not like this. We didn't think we'd use the top shelf, but we've used it a few times and it's worked fine. The bagel setting works well for toasting one side. One note, you must flip the bagels after slicing. The two outer heaters stay on, the inner ones don't.
