I have had two of these sanding pads when I first started woodworking about fifty years ago and they are starting to crack with age and use. I use them not only with sandpaper held between the flaps, but also with PSA (pressure sensitive adhesive) sandpaper to avoid losing the paper under the flap. I also use them with drywall sanding grids, with the grid extending over the sides to avoid sanding lines. They feel good in the hand and I have two on hand in 120/220 grit. Unfortunately the quality of the new blocks is not the same as my old ones. The flap isn't tight against the paper and the pins are loose and don't hold the paper in place. The new one works, but not as well as my old one. I didn't notice any of the weird smell that others have mentioned.
