I use special guides because they hold the sockets in place but they seem to be out of production. That's good, the ball holds the sockets securely and each of them rotates. I like the aluminum rail and the socket holders are plastic so there is no problem with rusting. I love that all three sizes are one size, my mechanics love to borrow my tools and it helps me keep track to make sure they get them back. This can be installed or placed in your tool box. It's sturdy and well made, I love it. Recommend
