Great Small Batch Fermentation Crock

After using this crock on a couple small fermentation batches, I really appreciate how well it was made. The crock, lid, and weights are heavy-duty ceramic that feel like they will last a lifetime. The glaze on the jar and lid seems like it is really thick, so they are easy to clean. While it is a tight fit, I can get my hand inside the jar which makes it easy to work with. The weights have done an excellent job of keeping my vegetables submerged, so I only need to open the crock to check the pH of the brine near the end of my ferment. All but the ends of the weights are glazed, so I was a little concerned that they might have difficulty drying out after a ferment, but that hasn’t been an issue – they are easy to clean and dry just fine.Fermenting in this crock is so much easier than using glass jars, which require a lot more attention. All I have to do is make sure the water in the top of the jar stays full, which allows the fermentation gases to escape while keeping the outside environment from getting in and contaminating my ferment. Am very happy with this crock and I would buy another one in a heartbeat.

Pros
  • Easy to use and clean! I like it better than glass fermenters but that's just me!
Cons
  • It's not dishwasher safe, so you have to hand wash it
