I finally bought this game after seeing some reviews about it and how to play it. Glad you did! After opening the boxed version you will see some notable improvements over the metal "dice box" version you will see: 1) The dice pockets are larger, my hands easily fit in to pull the dice out 2) The Dice pictures, the numbers can be seen more clearly (see quality notice) 3) The layout of the box is much better, it can keep your dice, bags and cards very organized. It basically consists of three layers: the box itself, a raised black insert that holds the dice in rows and cards in their respective slots, and a transparent lid that covers the dice/cards to keep them from falling out. raised black bet or try to keep them on top of the plastic bet but they don't stay organized Quality issues/defects: 1) Some dice are missing the color on the numbers which makes me refer to the card until I can 2 ) Not in the box slots for ALL expansions, you will carry these boxes with you, but most expansions are quite small 3) I found a couple of dice that no longer match their card suit and you need to click on obtain the main map symbol to recognize this. The worst culprit is Victor's spell, a light yellow cube on the cards, but it's actually pink and salmon in color. Actually it's not that important 4) Instructions are everywhere. It is better to watch the video with instructions and then refer to the instructions. They tried to simplify it by using a small character to give you the "too long/unread" version, but there's a good chance you won't understand them until you get the whole thing have read. 5) They added a play mat in the back. Books. That they expect you to either cut or copy. Serious? Couldn't you send 4 copies of this as a laminated postcard? This is annoying because there are 4 main divisions that your cube goes through during play. They make it clear that you have to play like this for specific reasons, but you have to destroy the book to use their beautifully painted rug, or photocopy it. I recommend finding a printable board that someone else made. You can find them on BoardGameGeek in the files or on the forums. Rules/Gameplay: Once you REALLY get the gist of the game, it's important to note that there are some changes to the rules, which are clearly marked on the front page. The game itself is potentially going stale, and I believe that's due to the scoring mechanics. The only way to score points is to have a creature that hasn't been destroyed since your last turn still in your ready stack at the start of your next turn. This means your opponent can summon creatures and attack yours, and if they don't survive, you don't get any points. This will continue until someone gets lucky. Note that you can definitely change your chances of luck depending on which dice you add/remove. You can also score with victory spells, but these usually have to meet certain conditions first. Why is this rating mechanic a problem? If someone gains an early advantage on a lucky throw, you don't stand a chance of scoring until they get lucky. The good news is that gameboardgeek has a ton of rules mods that keep the game fresh and interesting even when you're tired of the base game. I recommend the Quartifacts extension as it adds a new way of scoring. Overall: A great game with a deck building aspect that is just the right amount of play time. It is based solely on rolling dice, but you can change your luck by adding/removing dice. If you've played Dominion/Thunderstone/Ascension you know exactly what to expect here, but with dice. Minus 1 star for quality issues with the dice and cheapness due to the lack of 4 usable boards out of the box. Regardless, it's fully functional and fun to play!
