They smell strange but not chemical. It only smells. strange. I can not describe it. I'm very sensitive to smells, others don't care. It's not particularly tiring, but definitely to the point where I wonder what exactly I'm breathing in. I originally bought this to protect myself from pollen on my bike and of the 3 items I bought at the time I liked this one. I have used it on my face and it has helped with my allergies. But he had this smell. Because of this, my rating is slightly different. You can assume I will NOT be carrying this in my mouth because of the smell (I don't want to inhale potentially toxic crap). As I said, it was fine at the time, but later I decided I was too embarrassed by the smell to continue breathing. Even after washing, the little ones stayed. It also got sticky in the dryer, which is another warning sign (again, who wants to breathe THROUGH?). However, I wear it around my neck every day and considering how thin it is, it's amazing how warm it is. when cycling in cold weather (now 50F). It won't help much in the winter, but it will be a good extra layer. I also see that it works well as a hat liner since it's so thin. I will continue to use it as a creepy and probably as an extra layer over the ears and head under the beanie when it gets colder outside. I keep two of these in my backpack in case I forget one or someone I'm traveling with also catches a cold.
