That does not work. - Memory card reader

Does not work. I am using a MacBook Pro. I bought a reader from a store in town yesterday. Worked on about 8 cards. There are about 8 more to read. He stopped working. I tried everything I could think of to get it working again. Doesn't even read cards that have already been read. We went to the company's website. It is useless to help troubleshoot the device. I also checked their return policy and it requires all packaging to be included. I do not have it anymore. I hope the store I bought it from reflects what they sold. Otherwise I lose 50 dollars.
