Internal PCI-E USB Card

A few years ago I built a PC with a case that had 2 USB 3.0 ports on the front. The motherboard did not have USB 3.0 ports, so these ports could not be used. It dawned on me that there had to be an expansion card with these connectors, so I did a search. I found this card at a reasonable price. I installed the expansion card and plugged in the USB ports to finally use it. I haven't tested the ports speed, but I expect them to work fine. I'll try to test their speed and update my review. UPDATE: This expansion card doesn't seem to work together anymore. My ports have lost power, neither the keyboard nor the flash drive will light up or work when plugged into the USB ports I plugged into this card. Buy something else. UPDATE 2: I tried another 20pin to USB 3.0 adapter, it doesn't work with this PCI-E expansion card. The card does not generate any electricity at all. I connected a small SSD to the USB ports before this card lost power, this drive shouldn't pose a problem for the power coming from the card, and even if it did it should automatically reset power as soon as the SSD was removed. Do not buy this PCI-E card. UPDATE 3: The 12V to 5V buck converter IC releases magic smoke. The datasheet for the chip claims a continuous output current of 5A, my SSD under no circumstances drew 5A from the USB port so it could just be a faulty chip, but I'll never know.

Pros
  • I/O Port Cards
Cons
  • Not as thick as other models
