Review on πŸ’» Sabrent NT-SS5G: USB Type-A or Type-C 5-Gigabit Ethernet Adapter with Multiple Speeds [10/100/1000/2500/5000 Mbps] by Steven Darkshnar

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Okay, but 2.5G only on some systems.

Spoke to Sabrent, good support. Unfortunately, they couldn't help me with my specific setup. This 5G adapter only works in 2.5G on macOS Catalina, I will test other systems. Sabrent support agrees that the adapter is treated as its 2.5G adapter and even appears that way on macOS (see image). It's not about speed, it's about making your 5G adapter appear as a 2.5G adapter. Without installing drivers, the adapter would connect to 1G switch at 1G speed. Relax. But there were no options in network control to change adapter speed above 1G. When using two NT-SS5G adapters (one on each 2016 MacBook Pro with a 12-foot Category 6 cable in between), the automatic crossover only connects at 100 Mbps. The drives in the MacBook Pro are currently running at 1600 MB/s. I had to install the macOS driver to get the network card speed settings in the network settings window. I was then able to auto-crossover the adapter for 5G. After both were installed, I ran several speed tests, all fixed at 2.5G. It looks like a good adapter, but you can also get the 2.5G version if you're using recent operating systems. All those little N-Base adapters seem to work fine up to 2.5G and then they fail. You need the right 10G adapter (N-Base or dedicated) to reach more than 2.5G. Then you also get AVB support! Nice and warm hands. 😊
