I have built many high speed external volumes for work and replication for development and personal recovery environments. As a result, I've been testing both standard cases (Toshiba, Pioneer, etc.) and blank cases for the past 6-10 months. Some of my external drives are Samsung Pro 960 and 970. They are also some of the hottest running NVMe drives on the market and have been known to slow down under heavy sustained loads. sequential read/write will suffer a hit. Enter the ICY BOX: Featuring an RGB enclosure and an active cooling system, the design actually attaches a heatsink to the SSD drive itself before installation, and then a fan blows air through the heatsink exiting the top of the unit. CrystalDiskMark can be pretty harsh with this type of external media, and a poorly cooled NVMe drive will quickly overheat and 4K read/write numbers will drop. Just not with ICY BOX. It was able to handle even the hot sun, which the Samsung 960 Pro and 970 Pro are, and test after test after test the 4k speed stayed the same. The case gets warm, but more importantly, you can feel the warm air being properly pushed out of the vents. Are there any disadvantages? Several.1. The mounting cutout is inconvenient to move/position when installing the SSD. #2. The device comes with a cable and a USB-C adapter. At this price I wish it included two cables. #3. The biggest problem (and ICY BOX is not the only one) is the extremely inadequate thermal strip. This is understandable on a cheap device, but on a more expensive device, something rated at over 2.0 W/mK will go a long way in cooling hotter drives. I eventually replaced it with Thermalright 12.8 w/mK thermal pads and the increase in heat dissipation was noticeable. You can use even better Fujipoly 17.0 w/mK thermal pads for top cooling. However, the design and data transfer speeds are top notch and this has become my new main archive/driver/project case for now as it has outperformed all of my passively cooled cases.
