Review on πŸ“Ά Cisco-Linksys WAP11: Enhanced Wireless-B Network Access Point for Seamless Connectivity by Jacob Sampino

Works very well - love it.

I bought a WAP11 (v 2.2) plus a Linksys PC wireless network card and a PCI network card: all for home use. WAP setup is fairly easy with a great web interface. I installed 128-bit WEP encryption and a MAC address filter to provide at least some basic security. I found the signal strength and range to be better than the SMC WAP I tested and definitely preferred the Linksys web interface to the configuration utility that came with the SMC. The only thing I complain about the Linksys device is the volume. Although it's perhaps beyond the scope of this review, it's worth mentioning that I'm very pleased with the Linksys WMP11 PCI Wireless NIC that I purchased. It has a real real antenna that sticks out from the back of the PC and can be adjusted for optimal signal strength. The only problem I had was the Windows XP wireless network setup utility competing against the utility that came with the card. I suppose I could have let windows utility manage the card, but I ended up unchecking the box that allowed the card to be managed. This allowed me to use the Linksys utility to set it up and everything has been running smoothly ever since. Signal strength is excellent - much better than the SMC PCI card I've used before. I don't know if this was due to the existing antenna and not the overhang of the rear plastic SMC board in the form of a PC card. One more thing, Linksys makes it easy for you to update your drivers, utilities, and firmware from their very well-organized website. It's worth taking advantage of these updates.
