Wanted something inexpensive to control the temperature in my house, 1 above and 1 below to compare the difference. while it works fine. Connects to a computer via a USB port. First you need to install the software. The minidisk that came with mine could not be read by my computer. I'm not sure if it's a computer or drive problem. Regardless, after about 5 minutes of searching; I found and downloaded the software online from the Elitech website. [.]. I thought to myself, why doesn't the manufacturer just install the software on the device like on a USB stick. So all you have to do is plug it in. not sure (I think it must be something else). Once the software is downloaded, just plug it in, open the software, click the connect button, then go to options. You program the device from your computer. Then turn it off, press and hold the play button for 4 seconds. and registration of your data. In my opinion it is very simple. Data access is just as easy. Just plug it in, open the software, click the connect button, then click the download data button. You have the data directly on the screen. Then I load the data into Excel. it is exported as .xls. (not .xlsx) and should therefore be compatible with almost all versions of Excel. I use 2003. and it works fine. (Note: In my case the data is exported as text, so if you try to make your own charts you will need to convert the data to numeric values.) To reboot the device; I've found that the easiest way to clear the data is to just go back to the options tab and save the options again. This will erase all data from the device. Monitoring. I have found that handling affects the temperature (even for a very short period of time) and heats it up. Connection to a computer affects the temperature. While this sounds like the device is very sensitive, I've also noticed that it takes a while to return to room temperature. Yes, I don't get it either (sensitive, but slow). In a computer it heats up to about 79 degrees. It then takes almost 30 minutes to get back to 70 degrees. (I have data to prove it; it's a data logger; lol) Would I buy again. Haven't had it long enough to test battery life.
