We've been using an OXO cheese slicer for a number of years and we love being able to just buy new wires rather than a whole new cut. The wires will last a long time depending on how much cheese you cut and how thick that cheese is. The wires are very easy to replace and you can tighten the wire after a few uses if it feels a little loose. You'll know when to replace the wire when it starts slipping off the slicer handle even after tightening. At this point, the wire had deformed too much to continue using it. We probably change the blade every six months and cut a block or two of cheese a week (32-64 ounces), usually Cheddar and Colby, and Colby is a fairly dense cheese. This information is provided to give you an idea of what to expect in terms of how often you need to change wires.
