Works but not as expected

I only have 2 rechargeable D-cells that I use with this charger now can use. But when I put in only 1 battery, the charging indicator does not light up. I have to put at least two and in specific slots for the lights to come on. So I have no idea if the battery will charge or not if I just put in one at a time. From this I would conclude that my block is partially defective or the charger is cheap and generally defective. If it wasn't for this problem, it would otherwise look fine.

Pros

Turns off when batteries are being charged, protects against overcharging and extends battery life

Can't remember but there was something
