The average size is suitable for an average 9 year old child. My son is 52" and this jacket is a little long for him. We have to roll up our sleeves (once) or they get in the way of his arms. It's much nicer and more breathable than plastic raincoats. My son loves it in the Playing rain and he loves this jacket. It has a great hood design (it has a beak) to prevent water from getting on the face and inside the jacket. We've washed it a few times and it's holding up well.
