I switched from Internet to Comcast Xfinity and decided to buy my own cable modem to save $10/month on rent. I had originally considered an all-in-one router option, but decided it would be in my best interest to buy a separate router and cable modem. The issues I've found after doing the research are that many all-in-ones have wireless connection degradation issues over time and are expensive to replace. The biggest problem is that the cable modem firmware is not under the control of the end user or owner, the cable company is the only one who can update it. Therefore, you cannot apply the manufacturer's own patches and fixes. That's why I ended up going with this Asus CM-16 16x4 cable modem, given the price and the fact that the 16x4 Arris Surfboard SB6183 has some crazy reviews. . Apparently, the Arris Surfboard SB6183 gets very hot and sometimes gives off an unpleasant burning smell. This modem needed to be in my living room and regularly around small children, so I decided to try this Asus CM-16 cable modem. told them the modem wasn't an approved device, but declined when I told them it was on their list of approved devices. After it was prepared, I was ready to go after about 3 resets. The technician gave me two compliments on the modem and said he couldn't believe how quickly it restarted and came back online. He said that the regular modem they provide usually takes about 5 minutes to restart and resync, while this Asus CM-16 takes about half that time. I've only been using the modem for 24 hours, but so far it's delivering the internet speed I'm paying for and it doesn't give off much heat at all. I paired this cable modem with an ASUS RT-ACRH13 2x2 AC1300 Dual Band Gigabit 4-Port USB 3.0 WiFi Router and the wireless network smokes my old ISP's 2-wire modem both in range and in the transmission speed between devices. I will update this review after spending more time with the Asus CM-16 16x4 cable modem.::1-3 weeks update::I've been using the ASUS CM-16 16x4 cable modem for 3 weeks now. Except once when Comcast crashed near me, it worked great. I didn't reset the modem at all and there's no insane heat or nasty smells. The cable modem rarely gets hot every time I touch it, even when it's downloading big games or Xbox One updates. So far I'm very happy with my cable modem purchase.::Update 2-2 months::We haven't had any major problems with this Asus cable modem. We had several power outages in one night but it worked fine once power came back. It's still barely warm to the touch, quiet, and connects quickly to the Xfinity. Some evenings the LED lights are a bit brighter but they don't seem to bother my kids in their rooms. :: Update 3-3 months :: Still working. I recently restarted my router and cable modem due to internet problems. However, everything is back. :: Update 4 - 13 months :: I reset it 3 times in the last year I think. Something definitely happened once, because then the internet was restored. Still no issues with heat or odors. Very happy with my purchase. I did NOT get this modem with a discount or any other bullshit in my opinion.
